We first featured this holiday in
2002 and since then it has become
a firm favourite. Scenically, this
is a richly endowed region with
dramatic snow capped mountains,
rivers, shimmering lakes and a
beautiful coastline.For this holiday you will be based in a 2 star hotel near the market town of Estagel, 25km from Perpignan, centre of the Roussillon wine trade and the region's capital. Every morning a short transfer by minibus will take you to the start of the day's itinerary, which will include visits to wine co-operatives and privately run cellars. The emphasis is very much on meeting local producers and trying different wines. Each day's walk passes through changing scenery and the routes chosen cover easy walking ground either on footpaths, tracks or quiet lanes. To discover the varieties of local cooking, on three nights you will be dining in different restaurants, each with their own specialities. A lunchtime picnic will be prepared at the hotel for you to carry in your rucksack. Wine has been made in this region for at least 2500 years and a considerable variety is now produced from the area's thin and mountainous soil. The white Cotes du Roussillon goes well with the local seafood and the surprisingly full bodied rose is ideal with Catalan charcuterie, whilst the red Cotes du Roussillon Villages is the perfect partner to spicy local dishes.
