Bordered by Switzerland and Italy,
Savoie rises from the southern shores
of Lake Geneva and keeps rising until
it reaches the massive Mont Blanc. The French Alps, where fertile, green valleys meet soaring peaks topped with snowbound summits, form one of the most awesome mountain ranges in the world. In summer, visitors take advantage of hundreds of kilometres of magnificent hiking trails and engage in all sorts of warm weather activities. Our walking holiday is based in Pralognan- la-Vanoise in the heart of the Vanoise National Park. At an altitude of more than 1400 metres Pralognan, the capital of La Vanoise, is the perfect place to begin exploring this superb region. You will be staying for six nights at Hotel de la Vanoise, ideally situated in the centre of the village. From here you will leave each day to explore the surrounding countryside. This is a hiker's heaven with nearly 500km of marked trails. As for the wildlife, the Park was created especially to protect the ibex, the wild Alpine goat. At one time close to extinction in this area, today there are nearly 2000 ibex roaming the area alongside chamois, marmot and black grouse. Reigning over them all is the eagle, the king of the peaks. Today, country cooking is very much in vogue, with top chefs talking of terroir. The cuisine of Savoie has always been of this style and you will be tasting local dishes and the underrated wines of the region.
Price per person ( for 2 people sharing) - £510.
